The National Weather Service in New Orleans LA has issued a Special Marine Warning (SMWLIX) for the Gulf of Mexico. This alert is effective immediately and remains in place until 8:15 AM CST on February 15, 2026.

Affected Areas

The warning covers coastal waters from Pascagoula, Mississippi, to Stake Island, Louisiana, extending from 20 to 60 nautical miles offshore. This includes the area designated as GMZ577.

Strong winds and suddenly higher waves will be dangerous for boaters and anyone near the water. The National Weather Service advises that all individuals on board vessels must wear life jackets. Mariners should seek shelter or move to a safe harbor immediately and remain there until the hazardous weather conditions have passed.

At 7:12 AM CST, radar indicated a cluster of severe thunderstorms located along a line extending from 49 nautical miles south of Farewell Buoy to 49 nautical miles east of Pilottown. These storms are moving southeast at 30 knots.

  • Impact: Small craft could be damaged by briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.
