How this directory is maintained

The directory is hand-curated, not generated from the sitemap. It lists the top-level sections and hub pages a reader is most likely to be searching for — not every individual article, city, or ZIP code (those are linked from their respective parents and from the XML sitemaps consumed by search engines).

Each entry links to a page built from a specific government data source: CPSC, FDA (openFDA), NHTSA, NOAA, USGS, EPA AirNow, FEMA, U.S. Census Bureau, CDC PLACES, FBI UCR, or the international equivalents (Health Canada, UK FSA, ACCC, etc.).
