Flood Alert Issued for River Yeo and Parrett Catchments in Somerset Levels
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Somerset Levels and Moors, warning of persistent high water levels across the River Yeo and River Parrett areas.
Alert Details
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Yeo and Parrett, specifically covering The Levels in the Wessex area. This alert was officially raised on March 8, 2026, at 11:35 AM.
Affected Areas
The alert covers low-lying moors in Somerset near the following waterways:
- River Yeo
- River Parrett
- Kings Sedgemoor Drain
- River Sowy
What You Should Do
Residents and visitors are advised to take care and avoid walking, cycling, or driving through flood water. The Environment Agency urges the public not to put themselves or others at risk. Field teams are currently on-site monitoring the situation and operating structures and pumps.
Expected Conditions
While floodwater is currently reducing, a considerable amount of water remains on the Somerset Levels and Moors. The Environment Agency is maximizing the use of the River Sowy (Parrett Relief Channel) to drain upstream moors as water levels allow. Pumping stations are currently operating around Langport, and temporary pumps are being used at Dunball sluices during high tides when water cannot gravitate naturally into the River Parrett.
Timeline
The alert is currently active. Weather conditions for Sunday and Monday are expected to be largely grey and drizzly, clearing slowly throughout the day. However, a frontal band of rain is expected to arrive from the west on Tuesday night, bringing a return to unsettled rain and showers across the area. This message is scheduled to be updated by 1:00 PM on March 9, 2026.
