How many federal safety alerts did the US issue per week in early 2026, and which agency pushed the most?

Methodology

We queried the Areazine publication database for all articles published since 2026-02-11, a 5660-day observation window to date. We grouped articles by category (FDA recalls, NHTSA vehicle recalls, CPSC product recalls, FDA drug shortages, USGS earthquakes, EPA AirNow air quality, NOAA weather, FEMA disaster declarations) and computed both total counts and daily averages. Each article corresponds to exactly one alert event from the upstream source; Areazine's pipeline deduplicates against the source's unique identifier before generating an article. The counts update as the pipeline ingests.

Findings

The FDA leads federal recall output

Across the 5660-day window since 2026-02-11, the FDA issued 1,415 food and drug recall alerts, more than any other US recall agency in the collection. Spread over the window, that works out to about 0.3 recall alerts per day. The FDA also published 134 drug shortage alerts in the same period, a separate channel that runs alongside its recalls. Together these two streams put the FDA well ahead of the other recall sources. The pace reflects how the agency posts each Class I, II, and III action as its own record rather than batching them, so the daily count stays high even in a quiet news week.

NHTSA and CPSC fill out the recall picture below the FDA

The NHTSA posted 590 vehicle recall alerts over the window, which comes to 0.1 per day. The CPSC added 207 consumer product recall alerts, or about 0 per day. Put next to the FDA's 0.3 per day, the gap between the busiest and the quietest of the three recall feeds is wide. The ordering matches what each agency covers: the FDA tracks a wide span of food and drug products, vehicle recalls are a narrower category, and consumer product actions narrower still. All three recall families combined still sit far below the volume of the weather and hazard channels.

Weather, earthquake, and air-quality feeds carry most of the volume

The NOAA weather feed produced 9,284 alert articles in the window, many times the FDA's recall count and the single largest category on the page. The USGS logged 942 earthquake records, broken down as 37 high severity, 449 medium, and 456 low. The EPA filed 118 air-quality alerts across its high- and medium-severity notices. FEMA added 36 federal disaster declarations. These non-recall channels account for the bulk of the 12,726 total US alerts counted here. Weather alone explains most of that figure, because the National Weather Service scopes each warning to a small set of counties and re-issues it as conditions change, so one storm can generate many separate records.
