Affected Areas
The primary geographic focus of this alert is Smithers and the surrounding Bulkley Valley region.
What You Should Do
Residents are advised that staying indoors helps to reduce exposure to particulates. Individuals with chronic underlying medical conditions—such as asthma, COPD, heart disease, and diabetes—as well as those with acute respiratory infections, should postpone or reduce strenuous exercise until the warning is lifted.
This warning is particularly relevant for the following high-risk groups:
- Infants and older adults
- Pregnant individuals
- Persons with chronic respiratory or cardiac conditions
Anyone experiencing symptoms such as continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough, or wheezing should follow the advice of their health care provider.
Expected Conditions
The region is currently experiencing elevated coarse particulate matter. These conditions are expected to persist until there is a significant change in local weather patterns or a reduction in local emissions. Residents can visit the provincial air quality data webpage for real-time observations and the Air Health website for information on reducing personal health risks.
Timeline
The alert is effective immediately as of March 14, 2026. The Ministry expects to provide the next update on March 14, 2026, which will be posted to the province’s Air Quality Warnings webpage.
