Alert Details
The Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a cancellation for the Severe Thunderstorm Warning (IDQ21033) previously in effect for the Gulf Country Forecast District. The cancellation was issued at 11:02 am Saturday, 7 March 2026, as the severe thunderstorms that produced heavy rainfall earlier this morning have eased.
Affected Areas
This cancellation applies specifically to the Gulf Country Forecast District in Queensland. While the thunderstorm warning is cancelled, a separate Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall remains current for parts of the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West, Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central West, Wide Bay and Burnett, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and Southeast Coast Forecast Districts.
Expected Conditions
The weather situation involved slow-moving thunderstorms embedded within a monsoon trough over the Gulf Country. Significant rainfall was recorded during the event, including 133 mm at Burke Development Road (Lower Walker Creek) in the six hours leading up to 7:45 am. Although conditions have temporarily eased, further thunderstorms are expected along the monsoon trough through the Gulf Country. These may require new severe thunderstorm warnings for heavy rainfall to be issued, most likely on Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday.
What You Should Do
Emergency services advise residents to remain cautious despite the cancellation:
- Never drive, walk, play, or ride through floodwater, as it is dangerous.
- Stay away from storm water drains and fallen powerlines.
- Drive slowly and seek alternative routes if roads are flooded or damaged.
- For storm assistance, contact the SES at 132 500 or use the SES Assistance QLD app.
Timeline
The severe thunderstorm warning was officially cancelled at 11:02 am Saturday, 7 March 2026. Residents should monitor for potential new warnings that may be issued Saturday evening and into Sunday morning as the monsoon trough remains active.
