Alert Details
A Flash Flood Warning (FFW) has been issued by the National Weather Service in Albuquerque NM. The alert is effective from August 1 at 1:56 PM MDT until August 1 at 5:00 PM MDT.
Affected Areas
The warning covers the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Burn Scar in western Mora County in northeastern New Mexico. Specific locations include Mora, Cleveland, Ledoux, Holman, Morphy Lake State Park, La Cueva, Gascon, Chacon, Monte Aplanado and South Carmen. This includes State Road 518 between Mile Markers 17 and 39.
What You Should Do
This is a life threatening situation. Heavy rainfall will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams and ditches in the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon Burn Scar. Severe debris flows can also be anticipated across roads. Roads and driveways may be washed away in places. If you encounter flood waters, climb to safety.
Expected Conditions
At 1:56 PM MDT, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain over the burn scar. Between 0.5 and 1 inch of rain has fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 to 2 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1.5 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
