Flash Flood Warning issued by NWS El Paso Tx/Santa Teresa NM. Effective from 1:36 PM MDT September 4, 2026 until 3:30 PM MDT September 4, 2026.
Affected Areas
Northern Otero County in south central New Mexico, specifically the Salt Fire Burn Scar. Locations include Snow Canyon, Bear Canyon, Fence Canyon, Cherokee Bill Canyon, and portions of US Highway 70 between Apache Summit and the Otero-Lincoln County Line.
What You Should Do
This is a life threatening situation. Heavy rainfall will cause extensive and severe flash flooding of creeks, streams, and ditches in the Salt Fire Burn Scar. Severe debris flows can also be anticipated across roads. Roads and driveways may be washed away in places. If you encounter flood waters, climb to safety. Avoid flooded areas.
Expected Conditions
Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain over the Salt Fire Burn Scar. Between 0.3 and 0.7 inches of rain have fallen, with additional rainfall amounts up to 0.5 inches possible. Excessive rainfall will result in debris flow moving through the Salt Fire Burn Scar into canyons flowing north towards Cherokee Bill Canyon and US Highway 70. The debris flow can consist of rock, mud, vegetation and other loose materials.
