Special Marine Warning issued by NWS Lake Charles LA. Effective from 4:57 PM CDT May 23, 2026 until 5:30 PM CDT May 23, 2026. Severity: Severe. Urgency: Immediate. Certainty: Likely.
Affected Areas
Waters from Lower Atchafalaya River to Intracoastal City LA from 20 to 60 NM. Locations impacted include Eugene Island 224, South Marsh Island 78, Eugene Island 243, South Marsh Island 76, Eugene Island 273, Eugene Island 240, Eugene Island 251, and Eugene Island 217.
What You Should Do
Move to safe harbor until hazardous weather passes. Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible, keep away from ungrounded metal objects.
Expected Conditions
Severe thunderstorm capable of producing waterspouts located near South Marsh Island 76, or 59 nm southwest of Point Au Fer Island, moving east at 15 knots. Hazard includes waterspouts and wind gusts 34 knots or greater. Waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous seas. Small craft could be damaged in briefly higher winds and suddenly higher waves.
