Southeastern Craven County in eastern North Carolina... Central Carteret County in eastern North Carolina... South central Pamlico County in eastern North Carolina... * Until 430 PM EDT. * At 340 PM EDT, severe thunderstorms were located along a line extending from near Janeiro to near Croatan, moving south at 15 mph. HAZARD...60 mph wind gusts and penny size hail. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. * Locations impacted include... New Bern, Havelock, Morehead City, South River, Merrimon, Harlowe, Janeiro, Croatan, Great Neck, Riverdale, Open Grounds Farm, North Harlowe, Catfish Lake, Neuse Forest, Cherry Branch Ferry Terminal, Minnesott Beach Ferry, Arapahoe, and Minnesott Beach.

What the agency told people to do

For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Prepare immediately for large hail and damaging winds. People outside should move immediately to shelter inside a strong building. Stay away from windows. Please send your reports of hail and/or wind damage, including trees or large limbs downed, by calling the National Weather Service office in Newport at 1-800-889-6889. Large hail, damaging wind, and continuous cloud to ground lightning are occurring with these storms. Move indoors immediately. Lightning is one of nature's leading killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Torrential rainfall is occurring with these storms, and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
