Red Flag Warning Issued for Northern, Western, and Central Oklahoma and Western North Texas

Weather Alerts high NOAA · · Oklahoma and Western North Texas

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for parts of Oklahoma and North Texas due to high winds, low humidity, and warm temperatures through Tuesday evening.

Alert Details

The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a Red Flag Warning for increased fire danger. This alert, issued by NWS Norman OK, replaces the previously in-effect Fire Weather Watch as conditions have become critical.

Affected Areas

The warning impacts a wide geographic area across two states:

  • Oklahoma Counties: Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Noble, Roger Mills, Dewey, Custer, Blaine, Kingfisher, Logan, Payne, Beckham, Washita, Caddo, Canadian, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Grady, McClain, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Harmon, Greer, Kiowa, Jackson, Tillman, Comanche, Stephens, Garvin, Murray, Pontotoc, Cotton, Jefferson, and Carter.
  • Texas Counties: Hardeman, Foard, Wilbarger, Wichita, Knox, Baylor, Archer, and Clay.

What You Should Do

Residents in the affected areas are advised that outdoor burning is not recommended. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will contribute to extreme fire behavior. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.

Expected Conditions

  • Winds: Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching up to 35 mph.
  • Relative Humidity: Levels as low as 10 percent.
  • Temperatures: Highs reaching up to 80 degrees.
  • Fire Environment: Fuels (ERC) are in the 70th-89th percentile (4 out of 5), with a fire environment rating of 6 out of 10.

Timeline

The alert is effective from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM CST on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The warning was originally issued at 11:47 PM CST on February 23.
