Affected Areas
Doddridge County in northern West Virginia; West Central Harrison County in northern West Virginia; Tyler County in northern West Virginia; Pleasants County in northwestern West Virginia; Northeastern Ritchie County in northwestern West Virginia. Specific locations include St. Marys, Middlebourne, Salem, Sistersville, Pennsboro, West Union, Matamoras, Ellenboro, Friendly, Mountain, Alma, Greenwood, Wick, Canton, Smithburg, Lima, Hebron, Blandville, Highland and New Milton. This includes Route 50 in West Virginia between mile markers 38 and 66.
What You Should Do
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route. Report flooding to the National Weather Service by calling toll free, 800 401 9535, when you can do so safely.
