Alert Details
A Flash Flood Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Wichita KS. The alert is effective from May 17 at 8:31 PM CDT until May 18 at 3:00 AM CDT.
Affected Areas
The warning covers Northwestern Barton County, Northwestern Ellsworth County, Lincoln County, and Southeastern Russell County in central Kansas. Locations that will experience flash flooding include Wilson, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Dorrance, Olmitz, Barnard, Milberger, Bunker Hill, Galatia, Susank, Wilson State Park, Wilson Lake, and Ash Grove.
What You Should Do
Do not drive into flooded areas or go around barricades. Nearly two feet of water will carry most vehicles away. Turn around, don't drown. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
Expected Conditions
Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between 3 and 5 inches of rain have fallen, with additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches possible. Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
