Affected Areas
The warning covers southwestern Eddy County in southeastern New Mexico and northwestern Culberson County in southwestern Texas. Specific locations that will experience flash flooding include Pine Springs, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, McKittrick Canyon, Whites City, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Lincoln National Forest and Queen.
What You Should Do
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
Expected Conditions
Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Mesonet observing stations indicate that between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have fallen in the past 1 to 2 hours near Carlsbad Caverns National Park and additional heavy showers and storms continue to move northward over areas that have received heavy rainfall. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly.
