The notice as issued
Widespread rainfall of 1 to 4 inches has already fallen across the warned area, with additional heavy rain expected to develop overnight. While rapid rises are not expected due to the intermittent nature of the rain, significant ponding and flooding in low lying areas will likely begin or continue tonight. * WHAT...Urban areas and small streams flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. * WHERE...Western Sheridan County in northwestern Kansas... Thomas County in northwestern Kansas... Western Gove County in west central Kansas... Logan County in west central Kansas... * WHEN...Until 900 AM CDT Thursday. * IMPACTS...Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable. Expect many areas of slow moving or standing water. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 636 PM CDT, trained weather spotters reported heavy rain in the warned area. Flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Between 1 and 4 inches of rain have fallen. This areal flood warning replaces the flood advisory that was previously in effect for the area. - Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Colby, Oakley, Grinnell, Levant, Rexford, Winona, Monument, Gem, Menlo, Russell Springs, Mingo, Halford, Angelus and The Monument Rocks.
What the agency told people to do
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
