At 1059 PM CDT, emergency management reported ongoing flooding near 168th and Highway 370 and areas near Gretna. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1.5 to 3 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 2 to 3 inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Emergency management reported. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Omaha, Council Bluffs, Bellevue, Papillion, Ralston, Gretna, Bennington, Boys Town, Elkhorn, Millard, Offutt AFB, La Vista, Carter Lake, Valley, Springfield, Waterloo, Crescent, Cedar Creek, Aksarben and Chalco. This includes the following highways... Interstate 80 in Nebraska between mile markers 428 and 454. Interstate 29 between mile markers 43 and 63. Interstate 80 in Iowa between mile markers 1 and 11.
What the agency told people to do
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
