The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sheep Range and Spring Mountains, with up to two feet of snow and 50 mph winds expected through Wednesday.

Alert Details

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas has issued a Winter Storm Warning for high-elevation areas in Southern Nevada. The alert is currently in effect and remains active through Wednesday evening.

Affected Areas

The warning specifically covers the Sheep Range and the Spring Mountains-Red Rock Canyon area. The hazardous conditions are primarily focused on elevations above 5,000 feet.

What You Should Do

Residents and travelers are advised to consider delaying all travel. If travel is absolutely necessary, motorists should exercise extreme caution. Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in their vehicle in case of an emergency. For the latest road conditions, residents can call 5-1-1.

Expected Conditions

Heavy snow is forecast for the region, with significant accumulations based on elevation:

  • Above 9,000 feet: Three-day snow accumulations exceeding 2 feet.
  • Above 7,000 feet: 1 to 2 feet of snow.
  • Down to 5,000 feet: 6 to 12 inches of snow.

In addition to the heavy snowfall, wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 50 mph. These conditions will likely create whiteout visibility, making travel treacherous or potentially life-threatening. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are expected to become slick and hazardous. Strong winds may also result in tree damage.

Timeline

The Winter Storm Warning is effective as of 2:01 PM PST, Tuesday, February 17, and is scheduled to expire at 10:00 PM PST on Wednesday, February 18.
