Flood Warning Issued for Northeast Kentucky and West Virginia Counties Through Friday Afternoon
A Flood Warning is in effect for Lawrence County, KY, and multiple West Virginia counties until 2:30 PM EST as excessive rainfall triggers rising creeks and inundated roads.
Alert Details
The National Weather Service in Charleston, WV, has issued a Flood Warning for portions of northeast Kentucky and West Virginia. The alert was issued following significant runoff from recent heavy rainfall, with flooding of small rivers, creeks, and streams already occurring or imminent.
Affected Areas
The warning impacts the following geographic regions:
- Kentucky: Lawrence County.
- West Virginia: Boone, Lincoln, Logan, Mingo, Raleigh, and Wayne counties.
Specific municipalities and locations expected to experience flooding include Madison, Louisa, Logan, Chapmanville, Fort Gay, Harts, Mount Gay-Shamrock, Holden, Ranger, Spurlockville, Kiahsville, Dunlow, East Lynn Lake, Wharton, Bald Knob, and Danville.
What You Should Do
Residents are advised to “Turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to cross low-water crossings that are inundated with water. To report flooding safely, contact the National Weather Service toll-free at 800-401-9535.
Expected Conditions
Doppler radar and rain gauges indicate that between 1 and 1.75 inches of rain fell over the past 24 hours. While no additional rainfall is expected, the existing runoff continues to cause strong rises on creeks and small rivers. Reports indicate some creeks have already exceeded their banks and are affecting adjacent roads. Low-lying and flood-prone locations remain at high risk.
Timeline
The Flood Warning is effective immediately and will remain in effect until 2:30 PM EST on Friday, February 20, 2026.
