The National Weather Service in Peachtree City GA has issued a Flood Warning for Big Creek near Alpharetta. The warning is in response to minor flooding occurring along the river, which is currently at flood stage.

Affected Areas

The warning affects Fulton and Forsyth counties in Georgia. Specific geographic impacts are noted from near Cumming in south Forsyth County to Alpharetta and Roswell in north Fulton County.

What You Should Do

Residents are urged to follow the “Turn around, don’t drown” rule when encountering flooded roads, noting that most flood deaths occur in vehicles. The NWS recommends avoiding the area, specifically the Big Creek Greenway and associated walking or biking paths.

Expected Conditions

Minor flooding is currently occurring. As of 6:30 AM EST Friday, the river stage was 7.0 feet, which meets the flood stage threshold. The river is forecast to rise to a crest of 7.7 feet this evening.

Expected impacts include:

  • Greenway Flooding: Additional portions of the Big Creek Greenway will experience 1 to 2 feet of water.
  • Path Closures: Most walking and biking paths will be closed, especially upstream and downstream from the gage on Kimball Bridge Road and near Rock Mill Park.
  • Property Impacts: Portions of the YMCA Campground off Preston Ridge Road will flood. Minor flooding will also expand into woodlands and fields along the creek.

Timeline

The Flood Warning is effective immediately and remains in place until 7:00 PM EST on Saturday, February 28. The river is expected to fall below flood stage by Saturday evening.
