The National Weather Service in Wilmington OH has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of southeastern Indiana. This alert is an immediate call to action as flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin shortly due to heavy rainfall from thunderstorms.

Affected Areas

The warning covers the following geographic regions in southeastern Indiana:

  • Northern Dearborn County
  • Southern Franklin County
  • Northern Ripley County

Specific locations that may experience flash flooding include Batesville, Brookville, Osgood, Oldenburg, Sunman, St. Leon, Napoleon, Cedar Grove, Mount Carmel, Penntown, Lawrenceville, Saint Peter, New Alsace, Huntersville, Ballstown, New Trenton, Sharptown, Rockdale, Otter Village, and Interstate 74 at State Route 101.

What You Should Do

Residents and travelers in the warned area are advised to “Turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads. Most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Do not attempt to drive through flooded underpasses, streets, or highways. To report flash flooding, visit weather.gov/iln or submit a report via social media when it is safe to do so.

Expected Conditions

At 8:26 PM EST, radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the region. Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain have already fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible. Expected hazards include flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.
