The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties until 6:30 AM EST Friday as heavy rain impacts the region.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City GA has issued a Flash Flood Warning for portions of north central Georgia. The alert was issued at 12:23 AM EST on Friday, February 27, and remains in effect until 6:30 AM EST.

Affected Areas

The warning covers the following geographic regions:

  • Southeastern Cobb County
  • Northwestern DeKalb County
  • Central Fulton County
  • Southwestern Gwinnett County

Specific locations expected to experience flash flooding include Atlanta, Marietta, Decatur, Peachtree Corners, Sandy Springs, Roswell, Smyrna, Dunwoody, Chamblee, Norcross, Doraville, Clarkston, Stone Mountain, Pine Lake, North Atlanta, North Druid Hills, and Midtown.

What You Should Do

Residents and motorists in the warned area are advised to “Turn around, don’t drown” when encountering flooded roads. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. The NWS recommends avoiding flooded areas and being particularly cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

Expected Conditions

At 12:23 AM EST, Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Approximately 1 inch of rain has already fallen. The expected rainfall rate is 1 inch per hour, with additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Hazards include flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.
