Alert Details

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Upton, NY, has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for coastal regions of Connecticut and New York. The warning is in effect from midnight Sunday night, February 23, through 5:00 AM EST Monday morning.

Affected Areas

The warning covers the following geographic regions:

  • Connecticut: Southern Fairfield and Southern New Haven Counties.
  • New York: Southern Westchester County.

Expected Conditions

Residents should prepare for 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 feet of inundation above ground level in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline. Widespread moderate flooding is likely, which may result in numerous road closures. Low-lying properties, including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes or businesses with basements near the waterfront, are at risk of flooding. Additionally, vehicles parked in these areas will likely become flooded, and water may extend inland along tidal rivers and bays.

Timeline

The alert is scheduled to begin at 12:00 AM EST on Monday, February 23, and is expected to last until 5:00 AM EST that same morning. Forecasted water levels are dependent on the timing of windshifts from northeast to north storm force winds relative to high tide.

What You Should Do

The NWS advises residents to take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property immediately. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
