Blizzard Warning Issued for Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Nunivak Island Through Thursday Morning

The National Weather Service in Anchorage has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Nunivak Island. The alert is effective immediately and remains in place until noon AKST today.

Affected Areas

The warning covers the Kuskokwim Delta Coast and Nunivak Island. Forecasters note that the most severe conditions are expected north of Kipnuk, specifically impacting Toksook Bay and Mekoryuk. Areas from Kipnuk southward will also experience significant blowing snow.

What You Should Do

Residents are advised that travel could be very difficult to impossible due to whiteout conditions. If you must travel, ensure you have a winter survival kit in your vehicle. If you become stranded, stay with your vehicle. Additionally, secure any loose outdoor objects as gusty winds may blow them around.

Expected Conditions

• Snow Accumulation: Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch are expected.
• Wind Speeds: Wind gusts are forecast to reach as high as 55 mph.
• Visibility: Blowing snow will reduce visibility to one quarter mile or less in many areas. South of Kipnuk, visibility is expected to stay around one half mile but may drop to one quarter mile at times.
• Hazards: Severe winter weather including falling and blowing snow, strong winds, and poor visibility leading to hazardous travel.
