Flood Alert Issued for Eastern Yar on the Isle of Wight Due to High River Levels
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar, with flooding currently impacting roads and low-lying areas following a wet start to the year.
Alert Details
The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar in the Solent and South Downs region. The alert was raised on February 23, 2026, at 4:43 PM following a period of high river levels.
Affected Areas
The alert specifically covers the Eastern Yar on the Isle of Wight. Flooding is currently affecting Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road. Additionally, ditches around Fort Holiday Park are struggling to drain. Low-lying land, roads, cycle tracks, and footpaths close to the river are also at risk. While levels remain high at Sandown, no flooding impacts are expected at Langbridge and Alverstone.
What You Should Do
Residents and travelers in the affected areas should monitor local weather conditions and river levels. Avoid using footpaths or cycle tracks near the river that may be submerged. Ensure that any reported blockages are communicated to local authorities, as the Environment Agency continues to monitor the situation.
Expected Conditions
Following a very wet January and February, river levels are currently high. At Sandown, the river is expected to begin falling slowly over the next 48 hours. Virtually no rain is forecast for the next three days, which should allow the river system to recover. However, further rainfall is anticipated on Thursday, February 26, and Friday, February 27, which may cause levels to rise again.
Timeline
The alert is effective as of February 23, 2026. The Environment Agency expects to provide an update on the situation by 6:00 PM on February 25, 2026.
